Mt Pleasant Elementary

The force behind the MPE garden is 2017 Delaware Teacher of the Year, Wendy Turner, who also won the 2014 Delaware Nature Society Outstanding Environmental Educator award and spearheaded a myriad of other activities that led to MPE’s Green Ribbon School Award in 2015.  Wendy says, I believe school garden learning programs are an important and powerful curriculum tool for today's students. They provide a hands-on learning experience for children of all ages. They teach students the science of growing food. School gardens also provide freshly grown, healthy food to the school and community. When schools partner with a strong organization such as Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids, the result is undeniable: powerful learning for children through a real-life lens and local action.

The MPE garden was built August 2014 thanks to a grant from the Patti Mishaw Foundation, with additional funding provided by The Whole Kids Foundation and Sigma Xi Du Pont Chapter.  Together with a host of school volunteers, HFHK’s board member Madeline Dobbs and her husband Chuck helped build the garden.  Madeline and Chuck adopted MPE since Chuck’s daughter had been a student there many years ago.
