North Star Elementary School

The North Star Elementary School garden has been growing since spring of 2012.

Planning for the garden began in fall of 2011, when Garden Coordinator Natalie Alexander assembled a Garden Steering Committee of fabulous teachers who wrote grants and held fundraisers to make the garden project a reality.

Harvesting the vegetables

Here fourth graders harvest a mixture of different varieties of lettuce.  In the process, they learn about diversity and the importance of eating a rainbow of colors.

By examining the parts of their vegetable plants during harvest, students learn about plant lifecycles.

This lettuce from the garden will be served for lunch in the school cafeteria.  Hundreds of pounds of vegetables were harvested from the garden during May and June 2012.
