Read Middle School

Read Middle School's Integration A students began working with Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids in the spring of 2013, as the result of the USDA/FNS Farm to School Grant.

This school's garden program is a part of the curriculum for three classes of special needs students. Unlike our other schools, where the garden responsibilities are divided among the grades, the special needs students at George Read take care of all of the jobs in the garden. It's been wonderful to engage the same group of students from seed to table.

A number of teachers, including Connie King and Garden Coordinator Linda Alles have taken delight in working with the students in the garden. "It introduced them to different types of vegetables that they are not always exposed to. I think the garden has been a wonderful experience for everyone and we are looking forward to continuing with it next year!" said Linda.

Staff and students observe the garden before harvesting the lettuce and spinach.
