Meet Our Heroes Sussex

Our November 5th Meet Our Heroes gathering was nothing short of inspiring. In a close-knit setting, we connected with a passionate group of educators and supporters committed to giving the next generation something lasting—life skills that grow far beyond the classroom and enrich our communities.

We heard heartfelt stories of school gardens transformed into sacred spaces of connection, healing, and hands-on learning—classrooms without grades, where children discover joy, pride, and the power of creation.

A special thank you to:

- Don Ott, garden coordinator and math/science teacher at Sussex Academy

- Doris Person, principal at Rehoboth Elementary

- Harmony Ostram-Tuxward, special education teacher at Lake Forest South Elementary

Their stories and behind-the-scenes moments moved us deeply. We are honored to call them our partners and profoundly grateful for their work to bring the true spirit of garden education to life. And the cherry on top was Governor Meyer’s proclamation, a beautiful tribute to those who cultivate not just gardens, but curiosity, compassion, and community across Delaware.
